THOUGHTS ABOUT TERRORISM AND HATRED

Please excuse the fact that my considerations are not of scientific character; they are only a collection of haunting thoughts. They seem extremely chaotic, yet essentially, there are relations between them. I shall start with a number of such thoughts and then I will try to elaborate on them.

Stefan Wilkanowicz

The most frequent sources of hatred are fear, repulsion and humiliation. Goebbels based hatred toward Jews on fear of their power (rich German Jews) and repulsion (poor immigrants from Russia). The Rwandan Thousand Hills radio station every day repeated the message: "if you won't kill them today, they will kill you tomorrow"; this was followed by religious songs. I once saw a Cuban film about the Vietnam War. Every few minutes the images of warfare were supplemented with the slogan: "HATRED AS ENERGY".

"Hatred is fashionable" - one high school student wrote in a response to our poll about violence among the youth. Does this also apply to foolishness and contempt? Ania from the Gdansk school did not reply to hatred with violence. Was she incapable of hatred? Was her suicide a form of protest? Fear from terrorists builds a wall. This wall is built by hatred. Hatred leads to terrorism. Where does terrorism come from? Doesn't it come from fear and humiliation? The humiliation of an old culture by western "barbarism"? The fear of the might of the West? The haunting feeling of superiority and inferiority? To what does terrorism lead? Doesn't it lead to Satanism - the fascination with evil? Certain ways of helping others are synonymous with humiliating them; this leads to hatred. Telling the homeless about civil rights is offensive. Peace in the Middle East is impossible without a just system for sharing water. Does water belong solely to the rich and powerful? There can be no peace in the Middle East without reducing the level of hatred - without presenting good, which, nevertheless, exists and spreads.

The Thousand Hills radio station managed to simplify and improve Goebbels' methods. A religious sanction for murder. Sometimes Satanism spreads - in the wider sense - in the name of Christ.

Indeed, it is quite easy to use hatred as energy source. Hence, the temptation is even greater; all politicians deal with it, some of them yield to it.

Our poll about violence revealed its diverse origins - from fear to boredom, from fashion to existential anxiety. The remedy: all positive actions, preferably undertaken collectively. School: student council and extracurricular activities. The task not only for teachers and parents, but also for the entire local community. The council for the Youth: with the participation of all interested parties (obviously including the youth).

The case of Ania and our poll about violence among the youth. "Nowadays hatred is fashionable". "Only city streets have the time for us. They are our family". Why does everybody hide his heads in the sand? Separately individuals are powerless, only multilateral cooperation may produce significant results.

But at the same time: the return to real upbringing, i.e. the care for development of a human being. The anthropological catastrophe. Freedom without responsibility. The co-dependence without shared responsibility. Narcissist culture. General crisis of man. Competition instead of solidarity. Violence is a civilization problem. In Japan recently there occurred suicides among molested young girls. The necessary mutation of civilization; i.e. first getting rid of glaring injustices, like the limited access to water. The example of a cacique with a new well. The situation of the Palestinians - an article by Ochojska.

Concerns and states.
Hatred eliminates chances for rational policy. An Appeal from Auschwitz.
The mobilization of the best of youth - a poll about new threats.
